Neuro3DModels came about as a result of 2 very productive years of 3D modelling and design work, focusing specifically on both digital and physical 3D representations of the brain.
Our work leans heavily into the use of openly available data and resources to create anatomically accurate depictions of brain structures, neurons, connectivity, and more.
By transforming scientific data into anatomically precise, engaging 3D assets, we provide a unique visual tool for our partners to achieve their goals.
Our models can serve as educational or artistic installations, awards, conference materials and more.

In our work we utilize a variety of software tools and equipment.
The bulk of 3D modelling is done in Blender 3D Software where our animations and renders are created as well.
For ultrastructural models we make use of the MICrONS Consortium's data, available under the Creative Commons Attribution License. The data is accessed programmatically with Python and downloaded to then process locally. The larger scale structural models and brain reconstructions are created using an original workflow that processed raw weighted T1 MRI images via the FreeSurfer Software Suite.
The creation of various physical 3D representations of the models is possible by the means of SLA and FDM 3D printing, UV printing, sub-surface laser engraving and more.

Science and art intersect in more ways than most would expect. Scientists know that what they do is a form of art in and of itself and that even the raw images that are mere byproducts of experiments can be awe-inducing like almost nothing else.
The importance of data sharing could not be overstated, yet there is a range of less obvious benefits that it brings to society. Making data available to all enables more effective science and knowledge dissemination that would not have been possible if it hadn't been for the online repositories of scientific data available to anyone interested.
